Welcome from the Fellowship Director
In the Department of Family and Community Medicine, we offer a fully accredited, one-year fellowship in sports medicine to train you in the pathophysiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries, as well as the management of medical problems and illnesses in the athlete. We offer clinical experience in several different settings, including office practice at Bronson Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Ascension Borgess Hospital Borgess Bone & Joint Orthopedics and Western Michigan University Sports Medicine Clinics. Our fellows serve as the team physician for Kalamazoo College, a Division III college that fields intercollegiate teams in football, men's and women's soccer, basketball, volleyball, and numerous other sports. Other opportunities include event coverage for the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships, professional soccer, professional hockey, and area high school athletics.
Together, our faculty, as well as a team of of podiatrists, nutritionists, a cardiologist, physical therapists, athletic trainers, a social worker, and a psychiatrist strive to provide a well-rounded education in sports medicine. We encourage our fellows to conduct research with facilities available at Western Michigan University and the medical school’s Family Medicine Residency Program. Funding is available to help our fellows cover conference costs for annual meetings of both the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. A Sports Medicine Journal Club and various seminars also are part of the well-rounded educational experience.
Our sports medicine fellowship is unique in offering challenging clinical experiences, exposure to grade school, high school, college, and professional athletes, a dynamic and comprehensive educational experience, and support for individual research.
