Students

The policy IT18 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use applies to all members of the medical school community who use AI tools in connection with their institutional activities, systems, data, or operations. The student policy UME433/GSE433 Use of Artificial Intelligence Resources During Assessments and Assignments describes the use of AI resources during assessments and assignments.

AI Guidance

This guidance applies to all WMed students, including those engaged in coursework and independent study; research activities; clinical experiences, education, and training; and co-curricular and academic support activities. This is practical guidance for using AI tools responsibly in learning, coursework, research participation, and clinical experiences. AI tools can support learning and exploration, but they must be used in ways that uphold academic integrity, protect sensitive information, and reflect authentic learning. This is intended to help students understand expectations and make informed decisions when using AI tools. Students may also be subject to additional course-, program-, or clinical-specific guidance.

  • AI tools may be used to support learning activities such as brainstorming ideas or questions; clarifying concepts or terminology; summarizing information for personal understanding; and organizing notes or study plans. AI tools are intended to support learning, not replace critical thinking, effort, or engagement with course materials. Students are encouraged to use AI thoughtfully and as one of many learning resources.

  • AI use does not change expectations for academic integrity. Students must not use AI tools to:

    • Submit AI-generated content as their own work without disclosure.
    • Complete assignments, exams, or assessments in ways that bypass learning objectives.
    • Fabricate information, citations, data, or analysis.

All submitted work must accurately reflect the student’s own understanding and effort, even when AI tools are used for support. The default assumption is that the use of AI-tools is not allowed in assignments or assessments, unless specifically authorized by the faculty in charge of the educational activity in their instructions. Course-specific instructions regarding AI use always take precedence.

  • Students are expected to follow course or program guidance regarding disclosure of AI use. Disclosure is required when AI tools are used in educational activities, as authorized by the faculty in charge of the educational activity, and may be required when used in research for the following:

    • Contribute to written assignments or projects
    • Support analysis, synthesis, or organization of ideas
    • Influence assessment-related work

When disclosure is required, it should clearly state how AI tools were used and confirm that the student reviewed and validated all content. If expectations are unclear, students should ask their instructor before using AI tools.

  • Students remain responsible for all work they submit. This includes reviewing AI-generated content for accuracy and relevance; ensuring understanding of concepts presented, editing and refining content to reflect their own voice and knowledge. AI-generated content should never be copied and submitted without review and comprehension.

  • Students must not enter sensitive or protected information such as personally identifiable information (PII), FERPA-protected student information, protected health information (PHI), confidential review materials, and copyrighted curricular materials (including PowerPoint or PDF files from educational sessions and Articulate INDs) into unvetted third-party AI tools. When working with case examples or practice scenarios, students should use de-identified or hypothetical information unless explicitly instructed otherwise.

  • In clinical learning environments the default assumption is that AI tools are not allowed unless authorized by the clerkship or elective director. Students should follow program-specific and clinical guidance when AI is used in clinical contexts. If authorized, keep in mind the following considerations:

    • AI tools must not replace clinical judgment or supervision.
    • Additional disclosure, documentation, or approval requirements may apply.
    • Patient privacy and safety are paramount.
  • When participating in research, research materials under review are confidential review materials. AI-generated content must be verified using authoritative sources. Disclosure of AI use may be required depending on the activity or output. Students should consult supervisors or mentors before using AI tools in research settings.

  • Students should review AI-generated content for bias or stereotyping, inappropriate or exclusionary language, accessibility and clarity. Thoughtful review helps ensure respectful and inclusive learning environments.

  • Students are encouraged to explore course-specific AI guidance provided by instructors, institutional AI guidance on Data Protection and Safe Use, Transparency and Disclosure, as well as Academic Integrity and Intellectual Property. Consult academic support services with questions and the Medical Library for research and writing assistance.

When You Are Unsure

If you are uncertain about whether an AI use is appropriate, pause before proceeding. Follow institutional guidance for when you are unsure and consider consultation with appropriate leadership, such as your instructor, advisor, or program leadership. Asking questions is encouraged and supports responsible AI use. Requests for assistance can also be sent to Support+AI@wmed.edu.
