Department Chair
Welcome from the Department Chair
On behalf of our faculty, residents, and staff, I would like to welcome you to the Department of Surgical Sciences at WMed. We are dedicated to a culture of excellence in community driven patient care and transformative medical education. The department consists of the divisions of General Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, Medical Engineering, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Surgical Oncology, and represents more than 100 surgeons and researchers. We serve a community that has a long tradition of caring for its neighbors and this ethos inspires our mission and vision to provide exceptional patient-centered care close to home and train caring and compassionate medical students and surgical residents. We have developed a resident rotation that emphasizes rural surgical care and we have created international rotations. We have also developed our Laboratory for Advanced Anatomy and Bioskills that allows our medical students and residents opportunities to further develop their surgical skills.
The six divisions within the department are comprised of gifted and compassionate individuals who possess outstanding surgical skill and judgment, excellent interpersonal skills, and are innovators in various surgical disciplines. As we move forward, we will continue to seek diverse faculty, residents, students, and staff to reach our highest potential as clinicians, leaders, educators, advocates, and researchers.
Our outpatient services at the medical school’s Oakland Drive Campus provide a patient-centered experience with expert care. Together, our team sees patients for surgical consultation, provides postoperative surgical care, and performs minor procedures. In addition to our team of physicians, our clinical staff includes physician assistants, skilled nurses, and medical assistants, as well as experienced social workers and radiology technicians who work together to meet our patients' needs. Our physicians also provide inpatient care at Ascension Borgess Hospital, Bronson Methodist Hospital, and the West Michigan Cancer Center.
