Biosketch
Biren A. Shah, MD, FACR, FSBI is a fellowship-trained breast imaging radiologist and President of Global Radiology Consulting Inc. He serves as a faculty advisor for the WMed Radiology Student Interest Group and is a professor in the Department of Surgical Sciences at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed). Dr. Shah has held several key leadership roles at WMed, including Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology and Assistant Dean for Career Development. He also hosted the WMed Specialty Spotlight podcast, a monthly series featuring physicians from across the medical spectrum. Clinically, he previously served as Section Chief of Breast Imaging at Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Sinai-Grace and Huron Valley–Sinai Hospitals.
Dr. Shah earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1992 and his medical degree from the Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine/N.Y. State American Program. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency at William Beaumont Hospital (now Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital) in 2001. After six years in private practice as a general radiologist, he pursued a breast imaging fellowship at Henry Ford Health System in 2008, launching his career in academic radiology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shah has been deeply engaged in professional service and leadership. He has held prominent roles in multiple local, state, and national medical organizations, including serving as President of the Michigan Radiological Society, the Saginaw Valley Radiological Society, the Young Physician Section of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS), and the MSMS Resident and Fellow Section. Since 2010, he has served as a consultant on the Radiological Devices Panel of the FDA’s Medical Devices Advisory Committee. His prior educational leadership roles include Associate Program Director of the DMC/Wayne State University diagnostic radiology residency program, Assistant Program Director at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital, and Breast Imaging Fellowship Director at Virginia Commonwealth University Health.
Dr. Shah remains academically active, with more than 25 publications and over 20 abstracts presented at regional and national meetings. He has completed two research grants, co-authored two breast imaging textbooks, and is the founder and series editor of A Core Review Series, a comprehensive 12-volume radiology core exam review collection.
Among his many honors, Dr. Shah is a Fellow of both the American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging, and he is a recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award from the DMC/WSU Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program.
