What sets WMed Ortho Surgery apart in helping me reach my goals: WMed Ortho is a longstanding program that has long since been known for producing well-rounded, knowledgeable, and technically excellent orthopaedic surgeons. This is owed in large part to its emphasis on early operative exposure, graduated responsibility, and didactic curriculum. All of this is made possible by WMed Ortho's incredible staff of attending surgeons who are heavily invested in the development and success of their residents. Many of them strive to know us far beyond just our PGY-level and take note of our individual strengths and weaknesses so as to provide opportunities for targeted growth and improvement with each day of training. This, combined with the wide breadth of exposure to each of the orthopaedic subspecialties that our program offers allows our residents to be as well positioned to pursue competitive fellowships as they are to tackle general orthopaedic surgical practice after training.
Hobbies/Interests: Fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, hockey, ice fishing, waterskiing, running, and most recently, golf.
Favorite part of the WMed Ortho Residency Experience: Without a doubt, my favorite part of the WMed Ortho Residency experience has been the fantastic people who I get to work with every day. The residents are a tight-knit group of great people who look out for one another and make even the tougher days enjoyable. Even in our time outside of the hospital, we look for ways to spend time together, whether it be getting together at a local brewery, watching football with Orthobullets open, or getting out on the golf course.
Best thing about living in Kalamazoo: Kalamazoo has most, if not all, of the benefits of living in a bigger city without many of the associated headaches. Meanwhile the catchment areas for the hospitals that we work at is large and makes for a robust trauma experience, rivaling that of what would be expected in a larger metropolitan area. Cost of living in Kalamazoo is relatively inexpensive, especially compared to Chicago or Detroit, and we can afford to live comfortably and close to the hospitals. There are also plenty of great things to do in and around Kalamazoo. The downtown is home to plenty of great options for dining and cocktail bars. The surrounding area is home to an abundance of great and relatively inexpensive golf courses. For those who enjoy outdoor activities on their golden weekends, there are numerous opportunities in the surrounding area to get out and enjoy the abundant nature and wildlife that the state of Michigan has to offer. All in all, Kalamazoo is a great place to live and train!

What sets WMed Ortho Surgery apart in helping me reach my goals: I think the thing that sets WMed apart from other programs is the culture that we foster between coresidents. We are all supportive of each other and I feel that our senior residents are very invested in seeing us do our best and succeed. Everyone has been great at teaching, and I feel that I will be well prepared for rotations to come.

Best thing about living in Kalamazoo/southwest Michigan: There’s so much to do here! Kalamazoo has great breweries and has an impressive number of restaurants to try. We also have a lot to do in terms of thrift fairs, farmers markets and events happening in the area. Being a short drive from Grand Rapids is also great!
