Cost of Attendance

The annual cost of attendance, also referred to as the "student budget," represents the allowable costs for one academic year of study. These costs include tuition and fees; books, supplies, and equipment; a reasonable living allowance (food and housing), transportation, and miscellaneous personal expenses. The standard amount used by the medical school for living expenses is based on reasonable preferences and not on an individual's lifestyle and spending habits.

Additional Information

  • Appeal for an Individual Budget Increase

Students may request consideration for an increase in their student budget, or Cost of Attendance, for education-related expenses incurred during the academic year and not already included in the Cost of Attendance. These may include dependent care expenses, health care insurance premiums, medical or dental uninsured expenses, emergency car repairs, and computer/laptop purchases. The Office of Financial Aid reviews requests and makes decisions for individual budget increases on a case-by-case basis. Submission of a request does not assure approval. Please email financialaid@wmed.edu for more information.

  • Tuition Refunds

The medical school has a tuition refund policy that stipulates the amount of tuition charges that are refunded to a student who withdraws from all or a portion of classes during a term/semester. Students who obtain written approval from the associate dean for Student Affairs to officially withdraw from a term/semester or a degree/certificate program, or take an approved leave of absence for students in the MD degree program, may be eligible for a full or partial tuition refund that has been assessed by the medical school and also that has been paid by the student, according to the following guidelines:

    Tuition Refund Schedule

    Withdrawal Date Tuition Refunded
Before the 1st day of the term or semester 100% of tuition
The 1st through 7th calendar day of the term or semester 100% of tuition
The 8th through 14th calendar day of the term or semester 75% of tuition
The 15th through 21st calendar day of the term or semester 50% of tuition
The 22nd through 28th calendar day of the term or semester 25% of tuition
After the 28th calendar day of the term or semester 0% of tuition

Tuition refunds are generally not granted after the deadlines but exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis when illness, death, involuntary call to military service, administrative error, or other exceptional circumstance exists.

Refer to the Financial Aid Policy Manual for more specific information.
